January 2016 Board Meeting Summary

Conway Elected Chancellor of Elizabeth City State University

The UNC Board of Governors elected Thomas E. H. Conway, Jr., who has served as interim chancellor of Elizabeth City State University since January 1, 2016, to the position on a permanent basis. The appointment was effective immediately.

Aiken Elected Vice Chair of the UNC Board of Governors

Roger Aiken of Asheville was elected vice chair of the UNC Board of Governors. He will serve through June 30, 2016, completing the unexpired two-year term of W. Louis Bissette, Jr., of Asheville, who was elected chair of the Board in December.

Kindness is Key to Mentorship at North Carolina A&T State University

While meeting of the campus of North Carolina A&T State University, the Committee on Educational Planning, Policies and Programs highlighted a faculty/student mentorship between A&T student Angelica Willis and faculty member Shearon Brown, a professor of computer science.

A junior majoring in computer science, Willis is the first A&T student named to the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation’s (Epicenter) University Innovation Fellows program.

Fall 2015 Enrollment Report

The UNC Fall 2015 Enrollment Report was presented to the Committee on Educational Planning, Policies and Programs for information only.

The Report presents trends in enrollment across the UNC system, focusing on total headcount and core subgroups. Overall headcount enrollment increased to an all-time record of 224,915; total minority enrollment and transfer student enrollment increased, and 87% of first-time, full-time students were from North Carolina.

Degree Program Actions

The Board approved East Carolina University’s request to discontinue of the following degree programs:

  • BA in Art History and Appreciation
  • BS in School Health Education
  • MAEd in English
  • MAEd in History Education

In a related action, the Board approved ECU’s request to consolidate the components of these programs into the following new program:

  • MAEd in Curriculum and Instruction

State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA)

The Board voted to authorize North Carolina to join the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA).

SARA is a voluntary agreement among member states and U.S. territories that establishes comparable national standards for interstate offering of postsecondary distance-education courses and programs. It is intended to make it easier for students to take online courses offered by postsecondary institutions based in another state.
