Michelle Lowe Solér has been selected as a 2016 fellow for the Institute for Emerging Leadership in Online Learning (IELOL), a leadership development program sponsored by the Online Learning Consortium and Penn State University. Now in its eighth year, IELOL fellows work with colleagues from around the world and join a growing network of higher education leaders. IELOL fellows are selected through an application process and sponsored by their home institution. 

The five-month program spans July through November, including a week-long immersion experience. IELOL is cohort-based, requiring the thirty fellows to participate in a variety of individual, group and team projects, including a team-based case study. The blended program explores aspects of personal, local and global leadership challenges in online learning. Fellows will interact with national and international leaders in the fields of higher and online education. The program culminates with the IELOL Masters Class at the annual Online Learning Consortium conference. Solér will focus on a project informing efforts to define the vision and strategy for the future of competency-based education within the UNC System.

Solér has served as the UNC system’s director for competency-based education and assessment since April 2015. In that role, Solér is responsible for research and development of competency-based programming initiatives at the system level, supporting competency-based pilot initiatives at the campus level, and fostering collaboration and innovation in creating more accessible and affordable educational opportunities for college degree seekers. Solér works closely with UNC system campus faculty and staff interested in pursuing competency-based models, as well as national competency-based experts.

Prior to joining the UNC system office in 2015, Solér served as Senior Director for the Faculty Teaching and Learning Commons and the Division of Continual Learning at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Solér earned a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations from UNC Greensboro; a Masters in Business Administration from Wake Forest University; and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from UNC Chapel Hill.
