Chapel Hill, NC – University of North Carolina System Interim President Bill Roper has named Brian Cole as the ninth chancellor of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA).

Cole joined UNCSA in 2016 as dean of the School of Music and has served as interim chancellor since August 2019. He will assume the role of chancellor effective immediately.

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The University of North Carolina System has announced that Dr. Samantha Meltzer-Brody of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the recipient of the 2020 Oliver Max Gardner Award. Dr. Meltzer-Brody is the Assad Meymandi Distinguished Professor and is chair of the university’s Department of Psychiatry. She is also director of the UNC Center for Women’s Mood Disorders.

Gifts from UNC ASG inspire others to contribute

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The University of North Carolina System has named five students as 2020 Marian Drane Graham Scholars. The scholars will participate in an eight-week immersive and experiential summer program, designed to help them develop leadership skills and gain a better understanding of key issues facing public higher education.

As a part of the program, the scholars will be placed in a state government agency, where they will gain valuable working experience in the fields of public service and higher education.

CHAPEL HILL, NC - The University of North Carolina System and NC Community College System have been awarded a $552,000 grant from Lumina Foundation to support adults who want to earn college degrees, certificates, and other quality credentials.

North Carolina is one of six states chosen for the second cohort of Lumina’s Adult Promise effort, a partnership with the State Higher Education Executive Officers.

ELIZABETH CITY – Elizabeth City State University has announced the appointment of an 18-member chancellor search committee that will recommend three candidates to the full ECSU Board of Trustees.

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The North Carolina Teaching Fellows Commission has named 110 individuals as the inaugural class of North Carolina Teaching Fellows. Following the program’s return last year, the Commission received 232 total applications and named approximately 150 semi-finalists. Teaching Fellows applicants were evaluated on the following measures: GPA, standardized test scores, leadership and experience, a written essay and mission statement, and for those moved forward as a semi-finalist, an in-person interview.

Morrison-Shetlar, who is currently serving as Provost, Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, and tenured biology professor at WCU, will assume the role of acting Chancellor on January 1, 2018. WCU Chancellor David O. Belcher plans to go on medical leave effective December 31; Belcher has served as chancellor since 2011.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Five North Carolina schools have been selected as partner institutions for a new initiative aimed at supporting students preparing for a teaching career in the fields of science, technology, engineering, math or special education. Dr. Cecil P. The appointment was announced today (April 27) by the UNC Board of Governors during a special called meeting in Chapel Hill.  Sickora, who assumes his role on July 1, will succeed Gail Zimmermann, who has served as interim director and general manager since February 2014.

CHAPEL HILL – Stacey Franklin Jones, who has served as chancellor of Elizabeth City State University since October 2014, has resigned from the post, effective December 31, 2015.  Jones informed UNC President Thomas W. Ross of her decision this afternoon.

By taking advantage of a new “reverse transfer” program open to students who transfer from North Carolina community colleges, more than 1,400 students enrolled at University of North Carolina campuses have earned their associate degrees while working toward a four-year degree.  Eligible students are given the opportunity to combine credits earned at their respective University with credits previously earned at the community college they attended to determine if they meet requirements for an associate degree.

The Board of Governors of the 17-campus University North Carolina has selected some of the University’s most outstanding faculty to receive its 2015 Awards for Excellence in Teaching.  The 17 recipients, representing an array of academic disciplines, were nominated by special committees on their home campuses and selected by the Board of Governors’ Committee on Personnel and Tenure.

Each award winner will receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $12,500 cash prize.  All awards will be presented by a Board of Governors member during each campus’ spring graduation ceremonies.

Building on the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) already in place between the University of North Carolina system and NC Community Colleges, the UNC Board of Governors and State Board of Community Colleges have approved two supplemental articulation agreements that will provide seamless education pathways for students wishing to pursue specialized degrees in the high-demand careers of nursing and engineering. 

North Carolina’s institutions of higher education deliver a solid return on investment for their students and the state, according to the first-ever statewide analysis of higher education’s impact on the state’s economy. The University of North Carolina system, the North Carolina Community College System and the 36 campuses of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities in the state together created $63.5 billion in added economic value during fiscal year 2012-13, finds the study conducted by Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI).

The University of North Carolina General Administration has awarded six three-year grants totaling nearly $9 million to support game-changing faculty research in areas of strategic importance to the state.  Each of the funded projects involves faculty partners from two or more UNC campuses.

Jones, 53, will assume her new duties October 1, succeeding Charles L.

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Mary K. Grant, president of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts since 2002, has been elected chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Asheville by the Board of Governors of the 17-campus University of North Carolina.  UNC President Tom Ross placed Grant’s name in nomination today (August 1) during the board’s regular August meeting.  Grant, 53, will assume her new duties January 5, 2015, succeeding Anne Ponder, who announced in January that she would retire this summer after nine years in the post. 

Charlotte attorney John Fennebresque, a partner and vice chairman of the McGuireWoods law firm, will serve as the next chair of the UNC Board of Governors, the policy-making body of the 17-campus University of North Carolina.  His two-year term begins July 1.  In addition, Asheville attorney Louis Bissette was elected to serve as vice chair of the board, and Kinston pediatrician Joan Templeton Perry was elected board secretary.  The new slate of officers was elected by acclamation today during the Board’s regular June meeting.

Dr. Jay Narayan, John C. C. Fan Family Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University, is the 2014 recipient of the O. Max Gardner Award – the highest faculty honor given by the Board of Governors of the 17-campus University of North Carolina.

The late Leo W. Jenkins, who led East Carolina University from 1960-1978, and Chapel Hill businessman and philanthropist Thomas S. Kenan III are the 2014 recipients of the University Award, the highest honor given by the Board of Governors of the 17-campus University of North Carolina.

M. Lindsay Bierman, editor in chief of Southern Living magazine, has been elected chancellor of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts by the Board of Governors of the 17-campus University of North Carolina.  UNC President Tom Ross placed Bierman’s name in nomination today (April 11) during the board’s regular April meeting.  Bierman, 48, will assume his new duties August 1, succeeding James Moeser, who has served as interim chancellor since John Mauceri stepped down from the post last June.

RALEIGH – The State Board of Community Colleges and University of North Carolina Board of Governors today signed a revised Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) between the two public higher education systems, making college transfer options more defined and easier to follow.  The revised agreement, driven by an increased focus on student success and the growing number of N.C.

Independent counsel to conduct inquiry of information about academic irregularities

University of North Carolina President Tom Ross and UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol L. Folt have retained an outside attorney to conduct an independent inquiry of academic irregularities at UNC-Chapel Hill, based on new information that may become available.

University of North Carolina President Thomas W. Ross announced today that the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) will join efforts to support the retention and graduation of students at Elizabeth City State University.

TCMF has pledged $150,000 to provide scholarships for eligible students who are in their junior or senior year and need financial support to graduate.  To qualify as a TMCF Scholar, students must have a 3.0 or higher grade-point average and be in good standing at the institution. 

William C. Friday, president emeritus of the University of North Carolina and an icon of American public higher education, died peacefully in his sleep at home on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012. The longtime Chapel Hill resident was 92.

CHAPEL HILL – The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the 17-campus University of North Carolina a seven-year, $28.6-million Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant to help significantly increase the number of North Carolina students  who are prepared to pursue postsecondary education.
